Excuses to justify bigotry.

So I was surprised by a comment from a friend recently.  He was arguing that gay marriage should not exist, because marriage already had a definition as a male and female.

To be honest, I was stunned.  Really?  So because marriage is already defined as a man and a woman homosexual couples don’t deserve the same rights as hetrosexual couples?

Well no, they have access to civil unions ….

But civil unions are NOT the same in terms of legal rights.  That is the reason for the fight.

So what?  Should they do a carbon copy of the legal rights and call it something else?  Flagenhoobenbarning?  Why?

We have a word for two people committing too each other and the suite of legal rights that go with this.  It’s called marriage.  Why block access to that on the basis of gender?

Do we still have rapists marrying their victims?  Or marriage being a man, a woman, and her female slaves? or Soldiers marrying the women of the countries they conquer as spoils of war?

Why don’t we do a quick update, get rid of that garbage and replace it with two women or two men and have done with this nonsense?!?!?!

And since when was updating a dictionary more problematic than not removing the rights of people?  Really??
